HONG KONG, CHINA – Fireworks filled the sky over Victoria Harbor Monday as Hong Kong celebrated China’s National Day.
But the worst ferry accident in Hong Kong in the last four decades turned a night of celebration into an evening of horror and death.
At least 38 people died when a passenger ferry rammed a ship carrying Hong Kong Electric Company employees and their families, sinking it within minutes.
Rescue crews pulled more than 100 survivors from the water.
No one aboard the ferry that rammed the other vessel died or was hurt. And police arrested six of its crew on suspicion of endangering passengers.
