PITTSBURGH, PA – If “time is money,” would you open your wallet to hear the national anthem?
Maybe it depends on who is singing.
Call it a sign of the times. Everything is so expensive. Money is tight. Brushing off basic values has become the price of doing business.
Now the commissioner of high school hockey in Pennsylvania wants schools to skip singing to the red, white and blue — to save green.
“Ice is very, very hard to get, okay? And it’s not cheap. We’re talking $300 an hour sometimes,” says PIHL Commissioner Ed Sam. “It’s not that we’re not patriotic, that’s the furthest from the truth.”
The commissioner seems to mean well. He’s just trying to think outside of the box, so schools can afford to be on the ice. But there’s got to be a better way, right? Maybe they should charge an extra fifty cents for nachos or put out a donation jar! Or worse comes to worst, just speed up the song’s tempo!
