HOUSTON, TX – It’s always great to be on top, except in this case, you’d want to be on the bottom.

According to the FBI, our great city of Houston leads the nation in burglaries, with just over 27,000 in 2011.

That being said, here are the runners up:

#5 New York City was at 18,159

#4 phoenixes came in with 18,666

#3 was our neighbors to the north Dallas, with 18,727

#2 was Chicago with 26,420 break ins

Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that, residential break ins were actually on the decline in 2012 with about 300 less from the 9,155 in 2011.

Burglaries accounted for approximately $4.8 billion in lost property in the U.S. last year.

So do yourself a favor, make sure you lock up your place at night and whenever you leave keep those valuables safe.

The writers of this story need to realize that Houston is also one of the largest cities regarding square mileage. Therefore in comparing the crime rates, reduce to crimes per square mile and I guarantee you Houston will no longer be number one. It is a lot of area for our police force to cover.
