WASHINGTON, D.C. – Beyonce’s performance of the Star Spangled Banner at President Obama’s second inauguration, sure looked and sounded good, but was her rendition prerecorded?

According to a spokeswoman for the US Marine Corps Band (whose music was backing up the pop star) “she did not actually sing.”

A recording of the national anthem was recorded the night before the swearing in. Beyonce even posted some of the session pics on online. Getting a studio take of a performance is standard procedure before a big event, just in case something goes wrong. But was it singing, or lip-syncing that was going on during the ceremony?

The singer is keeping quiet about whether or not she actually sang during the swearing in, and to further complicate things, the Marine Corps are doing a little backtracking by now saying; “regarding Ms. Knowles Carter’s vocal performance… No one in the Marine band is in a position to assess whether it was live or prerecorded.”

Was this moving performance due to raw vocal power or someone just pressing play? Your guess is as good as ours.
