LINCOLN COUNTY, NC – Two children in Lincoln County, North Carolina were buried alive in a home basement.

Crews spent hours digging for the 6-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy. Officials say they got stuck when the wall of a basement collapsed at a home construction site.

Rescuers used everything they had to try and save the kids, bringing in bulldozers to help dig. They even went as far and dug with their hands at times. Neighbors stood by in suspense hoping for the best. Unfortunately, emergency management officials say they were unsuccessful since the kids were already below the ground when the wall collapsed. That’s when the mission went from a rescue to a recovery.

Neighbors say the two kids were cousins. It’s still not clear exactly what they were doing in the basement when the wall collapsed.
