foodHOUSTON, TX – The best chefs pride themselves on bringing new flair to traditional dishes. They’re also protective of their recipes.

Then there’s John Sikhattana and Straits.

“Singapore cuisine is kind of like a melting pot of cuisines,’ he explains.

While the folks here are as protective of their culinary copyrights as any other Houston restaurant, they’re willing to put themselves out there for a good cause. So chew on this: each year chef john and the straits team host the “Curry Crawl” inviting top chefs from other restaurants around town to bring their best to the straits patio and compete for the honor of best curry-inspired dish.

“It’s kind of nerve-racking, ‘ Sikhattana says,’ because you’re always like, ‘hey, I wonder what this guy is going to do.'”

The event this year will be May 19th and proceeds go to St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System. And even though Chef John hasn’t won his own competition yet, he’s still plugging away at it.

“It’s kind of bad if you win at your own competition, right? So, this year I might try for second, we’ll see.”
