Now researchers in Croatia are training regular honeybees to sniff out bombs.
That’s according to Tiramisu, the European Union sponsored program that’s working with the University of Zagreb and others to find and destroy landmines
At a Tiramisu meeting last month, scientists from the University of Zagreb presented their research on a specially trained colony of bees.
The insects were conditioned to search for the scent of TNT.
Scientists say honey bees can detect buried landmines more than three miles away.
Millions of landmines were deployed during the Balkan War in the early 1900’s.
And many of the hidden explosives remain even decades later.
