HOUSTON, TX – Seems everyone says they want immigration reform, but like everything else in Washington, D.C., they can’t seem to get anything done. So Sheila Jackson Lee had an idea– leave the Capitol and bring a few fellow Texas Democrats with her to Houston City Hall to hold a forum.
While the passion was palpable, most comments were one-sided, directed at Republicans in the house who were not there. So as you might guess, it got old quick.
Just before the event, news dropped that Congresswoman Sheila may not be in Congress much longer.
The Congressional Black Caucus has tossed her name out as a suggestion to replace Janet Napolitano as Secretary of Homeland Security.
“The decisions are made by the president of the United States,” said Jackson when we asked if she would be interested. “I’m honored that my colleagues would think that I have the capability to serve, but I leave that decision to our president.”
No surprise, her fellow democrats were in full support.
U.S. Rep. AL Green told us, “Congresswoman Jackson Lee has served on Homeland Security for many years. She has demonstrated an ability and a knowledge of these issues. I think she deserves an opportunity to be considered.”
U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio said with a smile, “Congresswoman Jackson Lee would be great at whatever she does, so we’ll see how it develops.”
That we will. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait as long as we have for immigration reform!
