HOUSTON – The deadliest day in Houston Fire Department was May 31, 2013. Four firefighters were killed and many others hurt at a 5-alarm fire at the Southwest Inn.

There’s no doubt that many lives were affected, but the Houston community stepped up to help.

More than $176,000 was raised at the Concert 4 Heroes that was held at Discovery Green. But that wasn’t it. Local business Pitts & Spitts also stepped up to help. They held a raffle and raised more than $47,000. A ceremony was held to award the money to the families.

Though no amount of money can change the tragic events that unfolded back in May, it’s just a small token of the community’s appreciation for the price these heroic families have to pay.
