chinaBEIJING, CHINA – Imagine waking up one day and the entire population of Houston is dead – 2.1 million people. That’s not as strange as you might think.

In fact, a new report says China performs 13 million abortions a year. That’s more than 35,000 a day, or about 1,500 every hour of the day.

At that rate, it would take only 60 days to eliminate the entire population of Houston, or, every man, woman, and child in Friendswood in a single day.

In comparison, the Centers for Disease Control says in 2009 the US perform about 785,000, about 2,150 a day.

China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission says it counted only surgical procedures at licensed hospitals and clinics, not medically induced abortions or those done at unlicensed clinics.

And, the numbers appear to show mostly younger women are choosing to have abortions, with nearly half performed on women under the age of 25, and most of those were university students.

China instituted its one-child policy in 1971 as a way to control its rapidly expanding population. Since then, the country has performed, by its own estimates, about 336 million abortions.

To put it another way, that’s about 22 million more than the entire population of the United States.

No matter what you think about abortions, that’s a huge number for any country.
