A California mother of three and fitness buff is defending a supposed controversial photo of herself. So what’s the uproar? In the photo, 32-year-old Maria Kang, poses in a sports bra and spandex short shorts, showcasing her washboard abs and three boys, 3, 2, and 8 months old. Floating above her head is the question: “What’s your excuse?”

Since she posted the picture last year, it has gone viral, with more than 16 million Facebook views, and has gotten more than 12,000 comments. While most of the comments have been supportive a lot of been nasty and negative. Critics are calling Kang everything from “obnoxious” and “fake” to a bad mom and bully. Some said that she must not have a job and just hang out in the gym all of the time. While others said she was shaming fat moms.

But Kang, tells Yahoo Shine, that was not her intention at all. She explains, “I wanted to inspire people. I wanted to say, ‘I know you think you don’t have time if you have kids. But if I can do it, you can do it, too.’” And as for the ‘catty’ “What’s your excuse?” line, she says she was borrowing a popular phrase used in various “fitspiration” campaigns.

“I’m sorry you took an image and resonated with it in such a negative way. I won’t go into details that I struggled with my genetics, had an eating disorder, work full time owning two businesses, have no nanny, am not naturally skinny and do not work as a personal trainer,” she writes.

Kang says she works out 5 to 6 times a week and her husband David Casler, who suffered a traumatic brain injury during a bomb attack in Iraq, isn’t able to work so he helps her with the kids.

All I have to say is Kang, you don’t need to come up with excuses or apologies for why you look and feel great about yourself. OWN it! I am so sick and tired of women not supporting one another. Of course not all of us will ever look this good, but instead of wasting energy criticizing a stranger why not focus on yourself and use that energy at the gym. Haters gonna hate!
