WINTER GARDEN, FL – Forget Saved by the Bell. One Florida gas station clerk was Saved by the Cell. (And he didn’t need Zack Morris’ dino-phone either!) A slim Smartphone in a shirt pocket made the difference between life and death.

Winter garden police say that a suspect tried to rob a gas station. Police say he ordered two of the clerks to open the safe, but the clerks were unable to. That’s when the defeated would-be robber reportedly got ticked off, fired a single gunshot and bailed.

The clerk had no idea he’d been hit.

“The clerk said I feel like my chest hurts, and so they started looking at him realized the guy had actually shot at him, hit him and the cell phone had stopped his bullet,” said Lt. Scott Allen, with Winter Garden Police.

The pain he felt? That was from the blunt trauma of the bullet hitting the cell phone. Other than that, the clerk wasn’t hurt.

“He’s happy to be alive, he understands thing could have been much worse,” said Allen.

Talk about a lifeline!
