MAUI, HI – Shark attacks usually happen when someone’s in the water, but what happened to a man in Maui is like something right out of a movie.

Officials say the victim, 57-year-old Patrick Briney wasn’t even fully in the water. He was just dangling his foot off the side of his kayak when a shark came out of the water and ripped it off. Patrick’s friend was fishing in a kayak about 500 yards away and paddled over to try and save him. But Patrick didn’t make it. He died on the way to the hospital.

Perhaps the truly chillin’ thing is that this is the 13th shark attack in Hawaii so far this year. The island usually averages about four per year.

Whatever is going on over there, seems like the safest bet is to just stay out of the water.
