HOUSTON, TX – Anyone who’s seen Home Alone knows this is prime time of year for break-ins. And in case you don’t have a punk kid to defend your home or car, the Houston Police Department is offering a few tips for the holiday season.

Among the main suggestions brought up at a Thursday morning press conference: don’t leave money (or gifts/new purchases) in your vehicle, walk through parking lots in groups and always be aware of your surroundings.

The fire department has some warnings too, mainly: use caution with space heaters and bear in mind that cooking fires and Christmas tree fires occur with frequency this time of year.

There were apparently more than 150 home and apartment fires in Houston last December. According to the Houston Fire Department, those amounted to almost $2 million in damage.

So stay safe, be smart and look out for your neighbors. ‘Tis the season!
