tonsilOAKLAND, CA – A seemingly routine surgery has turned into a family’s worst nightmare.

Nailah Winkfield took her 13-year-old daughter, Jahi McMath to the Oakland Children’s Hospital for a tonsillectomy. Doctors told them it would help with Jahi’s sleep apnea. But now Jahi is in a troubling sleep — she’s brain dead.

The family is shocked that Jahi could die from such a simple surgery. Now they want answers, but the hospital isn’t giving them much. Officials say they’re looking into what could have gone wrong.

Meanwhile, Jahi is on life support, and all the family can do is pray for a positive turnaround.
