HOUSTON, TX – Houston, a city of foodies, known for being one of the fattest cities in our nation. Not known for fitness, but that will hopefully, soon change.
Shape Up Houston and Mayor Annise Parker are issuing the million pound challenge.
“Obesity is the gateway to diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer, and it comes with a price tag,” said Lan Bentsen with Shape Up Houston.
“We’re a competitive city and we like to track things and so we encourage folks to sign up. I think we can do more than a million pounds. This is a big city, there are smaller cities that have a million pounds, we can do more than a million pounds,” according to Mayor Annise Parker.
In a city of over 2 million, that comes to less than half a pound per person. Shouldn’t we set the bar higher?
“We’ll have maybe 50,000 people actively engaged but hopefully there’s 5 times that many that have heard the message and are starting to do something. We’ve got about 2.4 million people are about 100 million lbs. over weight,” said Bentsen.
