How many of you get an email, read it, and then just let it marinate in your Inbox for a while? Or maybe you use the excuse, “Hmm. I mustn’t have gotten that email.” I know I have. Well now you can be called out, thanks to a new app.

There’s a Google Chrome extension called Streak. Once you install it, it alerts you as to when someone has read your email. And you know what that means? It means that other people can use the app and do this to you.

An email recipient doesn’t have to have the plugin installed in order for the sender to be notified that it was opened. The recipient also won’t get any notification that you’re tracking your emails, either. It’s all very secretive. Oh and did I mention Streak also tracks a reader’s location. Can we say stalker?!

The plugin is free and easy to install. Once you download it and give it access to your Gmail account, it will start automatically start tracking your outgoing messages.

The app was created in 2012 but the read receipt feature was recently added. Sneaky, sneaky Google.

I’m sorry but I already hate when people can see if I’ve “read” their text messages or WhatsApp messages. I made sure to turn that setting off. I’ve been on the other end thinking what the heck?! Why haven’t they responded? But now, emails?! Is it really necessary to track a person’s every move? And maybe you just don’t have a response or you’re thinking about it.

The last thing I want or need is Google all up in my business. So you know what, I think I’ll Google the nearest post office. Maybe it’s time to unplug and go old school.

And that’s today’s helping of The Online Dish with Maggie.
