UPPER EAST SIDE (PIX11) – A woman went into labor Monday and ended up delivering her baby in the crosswalk of a busy Manhattan street.

The woman, identified by the New York Daily News as 39-year-old Polly McCourt, rushed out of her Upper East Side building and was trying to hail a cab at 68th Street and 3rd Avenue when she realized she wasn’t going to make it to the hospital.

Already in the crosswalk, she knew that her baby was not planning on waiting for a ride.

Bystanders quickly realized what was happening and jumped in to help, offering McCourt their scarves, sweaters or jackets to keep her warm as she lay down on the street.

Her doorman, who had been trying to hail a taxi, knelt behind her to help support her as she gave birth.

McCourt and baby Ila Isabelle McCourt were taken Lenox Hill Hospital after the very public miracle of life.  Both are reportedly in good health.
