HOUSTON, TX – Weeks of protests and emotional pleas over proposed school closings came to a head at HISD’s board meeting, where tensions were high and the debate was heated.

After hours of discussion, the board finally voted: Jones High School will not be closing.

Instead, it will be repurposed into Jones Futures Academy – a vocational magnet school.

“The compromise here was to hear the voice of the community — they wanted jones to remain open,” board member Wanda Adams said. “I think this is a way we can work with the community.”

Meanwhile, Dodson Elementary School did not fare so well. Despite desperate pleas from the community, the board voted to close the school, leaving parents wondering what the future will hold for their young students.
