BALTIMORE, MD – Red wine lovers, it may be time to put down the bottle. For you chocolate lovers out there, you’re not in the clear either, so you might wanna step away from the box.
You’ve heard it over and over again that wine and chocolate may be good for your health; but if you thought you were doing yourself a healthy favor, it might be time to think again.
A new study led by Dr. Richard Semba of John Hopkins School of Medicine, says, resveratrol doesn’t have any significant influence on preventing heart disease, cancer, or extending your life.
Resveratrol is commonly found in red wine and chocolate, and is said to be good for your health because of the amount of antioxidants in it.
Researchers studied the effects of resveratrol on 783 men and women 65 years and older, in two Italian villages. Urine samples were taken every day for nine years to measure their levels of resveratrol.
During the nine year follow-up, 268 study participants died, 174 developed heart disease and 34 of the participants developed cancer. What did they all have in common? Their resveratrol levels were not associated with death, heart disease or cancers.
