Dark-skinned people being diagnosed with more advanced skin cancer
HOUSTON, TX- Dark-skinned people are getting burned! Blame the sun, and assumptions.
Doctors say folks with dark skin think they’re not susceptible to skin cancer, but that’s not so. In-fact, Dr. Stephen Tryring, a dermatologist, says that misconception is causing many folks to get diagnosed later, when the disease is more serious and the outcomes are more bleak.
So what to do? He suggests that we all practice sun safety. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Also: “If you see something new on your skin and you say to yourself ‘that was not there last time I checked,’ make an appointment and have it looked at,” Dr. Tryring says.
