HOUSTON, Tx. -- Tuesday is the day to go out and meet your neighbors, if you don`t already know them.
That's because it`s National Night Out!
"National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, to generate support for and participate in local anti-crime programs. To strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships." explained Houston Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Gonzalez.
But for many, it`s just an oppournity to meet the people who live around them, and the folks that serve and protect them.
"Little kids crawl in the police cars, crawl on top of the police cars and that`s good for the kids. They know the police are their friends and someone they can count on." said Jim Richards of Bellaire.
Linda Ware, who also lives in Bellaire, said, "I live on a street where a lot of the neighbors do get together and it kind of makes me think about growing up in the 60`s where we would have block parties and things like that."
"I think knowing your neighbors is a good idea just from a security standpoint. If you`re away on vacation, neighbors can keep an eye on your place and it`s nice to know about them too." added Richards.
Over 10,000 communities around the country are expected to participate in the community event.
