ST. PAUL, Minnesota – George Smilanich is a World War II vet who knows more about Minnesota Vikings than movie stars like, let’s say, Brad Pitt.

“I said, ‘Who the hell is Brad Pitt?’”, was Smilanich’s reaction when told Pitt wanted to meet him and for George to go Hollywood to part of a group of WWII vets consulting on Pitt’s new movie “Fury”.

It’s about a tank crew in the last days of the war in Germany.

Smilanich earned a Bronze Star for pulling his trapped commander from a burning tank, and he told the Pitt crew other war stories, like how frostbite nearly caused the amputation of his feet.

We’ll have to wait to see the movie to find out if any of George’s war stories make the big screen.Until then, the Smilanichs are saying “tanks a lot” for the chance to tell it like it was, and in many ways, like it still is today.
