The Harris County Sheriff's Office is the largest sheriff`s office in Texas and the third largest in the United States.

It has approximately 4,000 employees of which 2,200 are certified peace officers, some 800 are detention officers, and the rest are civilian personnel. Nearly 1.5 million people live in the HCSO patrol district.

It cost Harris County 45 dollars to house one inmate for one day (not counting booking and other one-time costs). The Harris County jail system prepares and serves 33,000 meals each day. Each meal costs the county 91 cents.
