HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- Ten female inmates at the Harris County Jail, chosen because of their performance, GED classes and general effort to self-improve, got the best holiday present they could have possibly asked for on Wednesday afternoon: time with their kids.

The organization Navidad en el Barrio provided food and three to four gifts per child. Unlike normal prison visitations, the mothers were able to sit with, touch and fully interact with their children. They got to give them the gifts, too.

“Today is really amazing,” said inmate Misty Holmes. “The one thing I miss the most is hugging my family, kissing them, spending quality time with them.”

Ten out of more than 900 women were selected.
