GLENDALE, AZ- When it comes to Super Bowl advertising, it’s a “dog eat dog” world, just ask the folks at “GoDaddy.”
The web hosting company might be best known for ads featuring Danica Patrick and a hot chick mackin’ with a geek. This year’s Super Bowl ad (posted online early) attempted to mock Budweiser’s heartfelt “dog and pony” ad.
In the spot, a Golden Retriever gets bumped out of the back of a pick up truck. He's not injured but has to find his way back home. Here's what happens when he gets there, "Look it’s Buddy! I’m so glad you made it home because I just sold you on this website I built with GoDaddy. Ship ‘em out!”
Since many dogs sold online come from puppy mills, GoDaddy’s ad made a lot of people “sick as a dog.” Dog owners we spoke were not amused, “It was just appalling. Every dog owner I know of thought it was absolutely disgusting.”
Another dog owner added, “The ad offended me and it doesn’t surprise me because of the kind of trivialization of women that they’ve been doing all along in their other commercials. It kind of seemed like the next step to go to - from women to animals.”
The “boneheads” at GoDaddy removed the commercial and acknowledged “it missed the mark” but not before more than 40,000 people signed a Change.org petition. In addition to bad PR, they also lost some business.
“I just know that I yanked my business from GoDaddy over that ad and I know of several other people that did as well,” said one Houstonian.
You haven’t seen the last of GoDaddy; they paid $4 million to entertain the 100 million people expected to watch the big game so they’re still going to run some type of a commercial. Let’s just hope they don’t step in “it” again.
