HOUSTON, TX - Houston police say two smash and grabs that happened early Wednesday morning were committed by the same group of suspects.

Around 3 a.m., a group of men in a tan Ford pickup backed into the Conoco station convenience store near Federal Rd. and Yancy Dr. , trying to get the ATM. Officers say when the suspects saw the clerk working inside, they got started and drove off.

Police say they that setback didn't stop them from trying again an hour later at a Shell near W. Tidwell Rd. and Hwy. 290. A truck matching the same description backed into the station's convenience store, again trying to steal the ATM. An alert waitress at the IHOP across the street saw what was happening and told two HPD officers who were eating there. They jumped into action, running over to the gas station.

"The pickup left. The officers gave pursuit to the vehicle. The vehicle went a short distance and ran into a tree. That suspect jumped out and ran on foot. Officers chased him down and caught him," said HPD Lt. Larry Crowsen.

When the truck took off, it left several men behind in the parking lot. Though they ran, officers caught up with three of them.
