NY DEA reports its largest heroin seizure ever

NEW YORK CITY -- Seventy kilograms of heroin—or more than 150 pounds—is now off the streets. It's said to be the largest heroin seizure ever recorded by the DEA in New York State.

At least $50 million worth of drugs were seized. Authorities also found $2 million in cash.

As for the stash, officials reportedly believe it was the main source of heroin for users in New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

The discovery reportedly started with wiretapping, from there suspects were followed, a shipment was watched and finally, agents searched cars and questioned suspects. 43-year-old Jose Mercedes Sr. is the accused chief of the trafficking network with routes in Mexico.
