GALVESTON – A plan to raise part of Highway 87 to Boliver Peninsula in Galveston is in the works. At least, it’s being discussed.

“The plan would elevate the roadway several feet; it would also put in place some embankments to protect the road from erosion in areas where it comes into contact with the beach,” says Precinct 1 County Commissioner Ryan Dennard.

But raising Hwy 87 won’t happen until funding issues are sorted out, and that could take some time.

“These things are unpredictable,” says Dennard, who has been communicating with the Texas Department of Transportation about the project. Nonetheless, Dennard says he is optimistic that progress will happen before long.
