AUSTIN - Hours after the fireworks went out in Austin Saturday night, more bangs rang out. A shootout at a downtown hotel, leaving two people dead. One of them, a suspect, who pointed a gun at police.

Austin Police says everything went down inside the lobby of the Omni Hotel just before 5am Sunday. A 911 caller reported a man had just shot someone. Austin Police say a man with a rifle shot an innocent bystander.

When cops arrived at the hotel shortly after, they saw a body lying on the ground and the suspect holding a rifle. The man then led police on a foot chase through the hotel before pointing his gun at them. That's when officers opened fire.

Chief of Staff for Austin Police Department, Brian Manley said "this is not anything any officer ever wants to be involved in, is having to take a life; but unfortunately our officers were put in circumstances today where that took place."

Austin PD says it doesn't appear the gunman knew the victim. The cop who fatally shot the suspect is on administrative duty while they collect more pieces to this complicated puzzle.
