BASTROP, TX – It may not be the midnight ride of Paul Revere, but conservatives in Texas and other states are sounding the alarm about Jade Helm 15.
Special Forces from the four military branches have begun covert “ops” within so-called “hostile” territory in the southwest, specifically Texas, Utah, and California, as part of the military’s ongoing training in unconventional warfare.
Bastrop is one of the 12 counties taking part.
Right now, things are pretty quiet in the city of Bastrop with life going on as usual for the middle of July in the Texas Hill Country.
That wasn’t the case back in April when about 150 residents filled the commissioners court for two hours to get answers from a lieutenant colonel about why Jade Helm 15 is not the start of martial law.
This week, some visitors from out east said they couldn’t understand all the fuss and anxiety. One of those visitors is an army veteran. "I just think it's funny that people are concerned about our own military and stuff. They think it's an invasion, which is absurd. Our military serves our own people."
About 60 military personnel and two Humvees will be on the ground in Bastrop.
"I don't expect a bunch of people to show up to protest. I don't expect to see tanks driving down the streets,” said Bastrop mayor Ken Kesselus.
