UNITED KINGDOM-- Do you think staying late at work every night will really get you somewhere? You're right! It'll get you a nice plot in the graveyard.
A new study by the Medical Research Council shows if you work 55 hours or more a week as opposed to the normal 35 to 40, you're 33% more likely to have a stroke.
"Yeah, I feel it coming," jokes Houstonian Oladapo Adigun. "Any more overtime, I feel it." Adigun says he works about 40 hours a week:
"You never want to create an environment where your employees are consistently working in that red zone, so to speak," says online vlogger and workplace consultant Milos Topic. "If you're driving a car and always having the RPMs up in the red zone... the engine is gonna go, the transmission will explode...and the car will be useless."
He's right. The study shows overworked folks also have a 13% greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease.
"If I had the choice, I'd probably only work enough hours to pay my bills," says Adigun. "I really feel like probably we all should work that way. We might feel better when we wake up."
Mythili Muktevi runs Ziad's Beauty Salon on Westheimer. "Here in my own business, I work 56 hours a week," she says, "but working for someone is much more stressful mentally and physically.... I'm not answerable to somebody, so that keeps me physically and mentally in low stress."
And that's the key-- the amount of time you are stressed out each day increases the more time you work. Researchers suspect that contributes to stroke conditions, along with sitting too long and drinking too much (something overworked folks tend to do).
The bottom line: when it comes to work, wrap it up at 40 and head on home. Your body will thank you for it!
