Fast food joints get “F” for antibiotics in their meat

There’s a new report card out there for fast food joints, and it looks like some got a big fat “F”, as in fast food fail.

It’s all because of “Chain Reaction” report compiled by a bunch of public health organizations like the Friends of the Earth and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The groups took a look at what’s really in the meat and poultry sold by several popular fast food chains, and, to no surprise, it’s not all beef and chicken. Turns out the fast-food food contains antibiotics, the kind that go into feed or drinking water to help cows, chickens, hogs, and other critters we eat to gain weight faster and cheaper.

But those drugs also end up in our bodies, and that could be bad news if we get real sick.

That’s because of superbugs, those nasty bacteria that have grown stronger on the animal antibiotics and have figured out how to beat the drugs we get from the doctor.

The Centers Disease Control Prevention for Disease Control and Prevention says superbugs attack more than two million Americans each year, and kill around 23,000.

Panera Bread and Chipotle were the only two top chains to get an “A” because they say most of their meat comes from animals raised without regular antibiotic use.

Chick-fil-A got a “B” because of its commitment to a “no antibiotics ever” policy.

Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's got “Cs”.

Failing grades went to Starbucks and Wendy’s who say they’re working on it.

This might help the fast food joints understand that some of us would rather get our antibiotics from a doctor instead of a barista.
