BLOOMINGTON, IN – There was a time, real or imagined, when fraternity initiations were more or less civilized affairs. Even a former president Ronald Reagan was photographed smiling while getting a paddling.

Lately, fraternity hazings have taken a darker turn.

The boys at Indiana University’s Alpha Tau Omega chapter are saying “Hoosier frat boy now”, after the university suspended them, and the national organization kicked them out because of a video that appears to show a recent event where partially to totally nude people stood around and watched a 21-year-old member take an oral exam with two female strippers hired by another member.

The university suspended the chapter when the video surfaced, and the national office revoked the charter, calling the video “highly inappropriate and vulgar.”

The national office also said no pledge was forced to participate.

Say what you will, but it’s hard to imagine a booze-filled frat pledge being forced to participate in a hazing and grazing opportunity.

Five years ago, two-thirds of its members were kicked out for hazing and alcohol violations.

We imagine this year’s members could expect a return to the paddling tradition, especially when their mama’s get a hold of them.
