HOUSTON – Another victory for a local transgender widow in a legal battle over her late husband’s estate. Nikki Araguz Loyd was married to firefighter, Thomas Araguz, and months later got a sex change.

Back in 2010, the firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

A Wharton County judge ruled that the widow’s marriage was void since same-sex marriage was not recognized in the state of Texas at the time.

However, she appealed and won last February.

A state appeals court ruled in Loyd’s favor and the judge who voided the couple’s marriage now has to reverse his ruling.
