MODESTO, CA - What happened to a pastor in Modesto was quite ironic.  Tom Smith was accidentally shot while he was taking a self-defense class inside a martial arts facility.

"The person who had the gun he was very, very broken over something like this happening because they're friends," said Glen Berteau, senior pastor of The House church.

Modesto police say Smith was role-playing with the instructor, Phillip Rushing,  when he was shot.

Rushing holstered a gun when somehow it fired and struck the pastor in the side.  Smith's friends say he's forgiven the instructor, and no charges have been filed.  Smith was hospitalized for nearly two weeks.  Pastor Berteau said Smith is "recuperating well, in a sense, as far as his condition improving every day."
