HOUSTON - Barbers at J&O Barber Studio, in Houston's Fifth Ward were giving away free haircuts today to underprivileged children.

“I grew up out here in the Fifth Ward, and I wasn’t able to get a haircut for Christmas so, it makes me feel real good to be able to give back” says co-owner Jarvis Oakes.

Most of the teenagers receiving the cuts wanted to look good for Christmas but Treveon Shepard had a different reason, “The girls! I be getting a lot of girls when I get this haircut.”

Fourteen-year-old Cameron Walker appreciates the barbers working on their day off and giving free cuts, “I think it makes a very big difference because some people cannot afford a haircut, some people live on the street, but they’re doing a good job.”

Obie Ridley, the "O" in J&O says it's their duty to give back, “We’ve been in this community over 15 years. We feel obligated and we always give… that’s why God has blessed us with so much.”

“It helps out a lot because sometimes you do not have the finances to get gifts especially around the a time like this, the holidays to buy gifts and get a haircut,” says Krystal Williams, whose son Jaylyn’s got a cut.

If you missed today's free cuts, check back in August when they usually do free back-to-school haircuts.
