TOYAMA BAY, JAPAN - It is a rare, underwater discovery that looks like something out of an old monster movie. An elusive giant squid was caught on camera in Japan on Christmas Eve.

A diver found the animal in Toyama Bay, in shallow water, scarcely visited by these creatures. The diver estimates the squid is about 13 feet long, but this species of squid can get as big as 40 feet.

As big as these underwater giants are, they're not spotted very often. In fact,  an adult giant squid had never been filmed until 2002.

This squid eventually made its way back out to sea, and it's probably a good thing. If it stuck around Japan any longer, it might have become someone's dinner.
