PEARLAND, TX - Barbeques will be a familiar sight this Memorial Day weekend, but on Saturday, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Pearland kicked it up a notch with a cook-off competition.
More than 50 teams competed in the event which raises money for veterans services. Many of the organizers and event goers served in the armed forces, which adds extra meaning to this weekend.
"Me, being a retired Command Sergeant Major, it means a lot," Eric Kloss said. "I had five tours. I've lost a lot of people that I know, and so to be out here to support them, to support the families, they'll never be forgotten. That's why we're here today, we're here to support them."
Kloss added the cook-off is just one of the many events VFW Post 7109 puts on, including community events, bingo nights and service projects.
