A breakthrough in the fight against ALS thanks in part to the “Ice Bucket Challenge”

HOUSTON- The ALS Association is crediting the "Ice Bucket Challenge" and the funds it brought in for helping with the discovery of a gene they say contributes to the disease.

The challenge was a viral sensation during the summer of 2014.  It raised roughly $115 million for the association.

A study published this week says understanding the gene's role can help researchers develop to therapies to treat the degenerative disease.
