HOUSTON -- Houston police are investigating after a man shot and killed himself following a chase, which ended near Clear Lake early Thursday.

According to police, officers spotted a driver committing several traffic violations around 12:35 a.m. and, suspecting the driver may have been intoxicated, pulled the vehicle over in the 17000 block of the Gulf Freeway.

As officers approached the vehicle, one of them noticed the driver was sitting on a gun and yelled a warning to his partner.

That is when the driver, identified as Gary Leonard Blalock Jr., sped off.

Police followed Blalock to the 13800 block of the Gulf Freeway, where the vehicle crashed into a guard rail near a service road entrance ramp.

Officers approached the vehicle again, and discovered Blalock, 38, was dead.

"Once they get to the vehicle, they realize the suspect has suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and is sitting in the front seat of the vehicle," HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva said.

Now investigators are trying to figure out why the driver fled the cops in the first place, and, why would he take his own life in the end.

As standard protocol, the in-custody death is being investigated by HPD Homicide and the Internal Affairs Division.
