LOS ANGELES — Selena Gomez has decided to slow down, and will be taking time off from her music career.
After announcing last year, she had Lupus, the singer has decided to face her disease head on by focusing on her well-being.
Gomez, who is only 24-years-old, said she struggles with common side effects of the disease such as anxiety, panic attacks and depression.
"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness, and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off," she told CNN.
Around 1.5 million Americans live with Lupus, and the singer hopes her public struggle with the disease will encourage other sufferers to face it as well.
With two September performances in Canada, and tour dates in Europe and South Africa scheduled through the end of 2016, Gomez' representatives have not yet commented on whether she will cancel or reschedule any of her shows.
