HOUSTON - Helping find jobs for the jobless is one of the top priorities for the City of Houston.
Turnaround Houston is an initiative of Mayor Sylvester Turner, which was launched in response to high unemployment in some of the most low-income communities throughout Houston.”
The program, which was launched in back in March, organizes gathering that bring public and private career-services together in the same place — often places like the Kashmere Multi-Service Center.
“The workshops we're presenting today are resume development, so we actually have a computer lab where people can actually develop their resumes here on site, and interview preparation,” Director Carlecia Wright of Houston's Office of Opportunity said.
And the initiative is offer people far more than a chance to flip burgers.
“I was in the construction industry and the oil business, the oil business tanked out like everybody knows, so I’m kinda looking for a new career, in plumbing, maintenance, that kinda thing, which I’ve got leads for today,” applicant David Mattson said.
Turnaround Houston is also an opportunity for those looking for a second chance if their criminal record isn't as squeaky clean as they might like.
“Having an interview, ace it, then they have to do my background, then they tell me unfortunately because of my background they can't hire me. But they always say I’m a great candidate. I don't understand how people only look at that certain situation. It shouldn't define a person because I will never make that mistake again,” applicant Talisha Martin said.
Job seekers even took advantage of a free trim today courtesy of Franklin Barber School.
“For us to be able to come in and groom these guys and these ladies, to get them ready for that interview, to get them back in the workforce is a great thing for them as well,” CEO Ron Jemison of the Franklin Institute said.
If you missed Turnaround Houston today, you can still catch it on November 5th in Acres Homes. The job search struggle is hard, but help is out there and the first step - is showing up.
