MADISON COUNTY, Texas — A gruesome discovery has uncovered a mystery in Madison County, 100 miles north of Houston.

A rancher was mowing grass near the I-45 South feeder road Saturday afternoon when he found a box full of badly decomposed human remains.

Preliminary results from the medical examiner's office show the body is that of a girl between the ages of 2 and 5.

"The medical examiner noted that it does appear to be that of an undeveloped child for that age," said Madison County Sheriff Travis Neeley. "It also appeared to have had at one point some serious medical issues. There was a medically-inserted PEG tube, which is used to direct feeding to the stomach."

There are no signs of trauma and no cause of death at this time. The case is open and has been ruled a homicide.

"At this time, we don't have a person of interest," said Neeley.

Anyone with information should call the Madison County Sheriff's Office.
