DAYTON, Texas — A parent and several children were injured Thursday morning when a Dayton Independent School District bus crashed into an SUV, according to investigators.

The bus was driving down State Highway 321 North when it struck an SUV carrying a mother and her children around 6:50 a.m. near Tram Road, officials with the Texas Highway Patrol said. Investigators said the SUV was trying to turn into the high school and failed to yield the right of way of the approaching school bus.

The driver of the SUV and her four children, who were in the vehicle, were all taken to Liberty Dayton Hospital with minor injuries. Paramedics also took five students who were riding the bus to the same hospital as a precaution, officers said.

Dayton ISD administrators said other students riding the bus returned to class and will be monitored by school nurses throughout the day.

The crash is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
