TYLER, Texas — A man was charged with capital murder Monday in the death of a kidnapped 10-year-old girl near Tyler last week, officers said.

The remains of Kayla Gomez Orozco were found Saturday night at the bottom of a well located on a family member’s property, investigators said. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies had been searching for Kayla since she went missing around 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 while attending service with her family at the Bullard First Assemble Church. Bullard is a small town about 30 minutes south of Tyler.

Kayla’s brother said one minute they were praying, and the next minute his sister was gone.

Gustavo Zavala-Garcia has been charged in her death, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

The child’s body was taken to Dallas for an autopsy, and investigators are still awaiting the cause of death.
