HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A security guard was fatally shot at an illegal game room on the north side of town Sunday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigator said the guard was fending off an armed intruder around 8:30 p.m. at a game room near the intersections of Dale Street and Lillja Road. He first saw the man approaching on the building’s surveillance camera, officers said. The guard rushed to lock the door, but the man beat him there and kicked the door in, deputies said.

Officers said the intruder fired at the guard three times, striking the victim and killing him. Up to 40 people were inside at the time but only a few stayed to tried and save the victim’s life, deputies said.

Deputies said his killer drove off in a white minivan. The van’s sliding passenger door was ripped off as it rushed through the property’s gate, officers said.

An investigation is ongoing.
