HOUSTON — Houston investigators are still looking for answers after a 10-year-old boy shot his father during a car ride one school morning, authorities said.

Antonio Medardo Alvarenga, 40, was driving the boy and his 10-year-old sister to school around 7 a.m. Tuesday when the son pulled a pistol from his backpack, officers said. The child fired once, sending a bullet straight through the back of the driver-side seat, police said.

The shooting happened while the family was riding near the 7000 block of Bissonnet, investigators said.

The father was taken to Memorial Herman hospital in good condition, the Houston Police Department said. Once homicide investigators arrived at the scene, officers took the boy to the Children’s Assessment Center for further questioning.

Police are still trying to figure out what motivated the boy to shoot his parent.

No charges have been filed at this time, and an investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to call HPD homicide division at 713-308-3600.
