Man killed in shootout after leading officers on chase in Baytown

BAYTOWN, Texas — A man was killed in shootout with officers Tuesday morning after leading authorities on a chase, which ended in a crash, in Baytown.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, around 8:49 a.m., deputies attempted to stop a black Mercedes SUV traveling westbound on I-10 at mile marker 840 for a traffic violation.

The driver refused to stop and a chase began.

Deputies chased the suspect into Chambers County, where they were joined by Chambers the County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Baytown police. The Sheriff’s helicopter was in the area on patrol and was able to maintain communications during the pursuit.

When the pursuit entered into Baytown, Baytown police attempted to spike the vehicle at Garth and I-10, and the suspect tried to strike the officer.

The suspect crashed at Main and IH-10, then began firing at several officers.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who died at the scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

It is not known, at this time, why the suspect fled.

At this time, we do not know why the suspect fled and the incident is under investigation.
