HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Firefighters and several other emergency crews responded to a fire Wednesday night at a restaurant, authorities said.

The fire broke out at Laurenzo’s El Tiempo Cantina on Kingsland Boulevard at Park Grove, firefighters said.

“After about five minutes of being on the scene, smoke started coming though the roof on the back section, on the Kingsland side of the building. It started to turn into fire as it continued to go through the roof,” Lt. Simon VanDyke said.

Investigators said the restaurant closed at 10 p.m. so no one was inside at the time of the fire.

Jose Escolero lives a few blocks from the restaurant. He arrived at the scene before police.

“I just saw a whole bunch of flames going up,” Escolero said. “I just rushed over here, and I just saw a big old flame. And then the police started coming, and then the fire department got here.”

He’d just celebrated his father’s birthday at Laurenzo’s a few weeks ago. He said the restaurant had only been opened a few months.

“It’s brand new — people are nice, waiters are nice,” Escolero said. “It’s just sad to see this happen.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.
